UPCYCLING THE OCEANS GREECE

The Ecoalf Foundation wants to extend Upcycling the Oceans throughout the Mediterranean basin and is aware of the value of partnerships to achieve this ambitious goal. This is why in 2020 in 2020, Greece established a partnership agreement with Enaleia, a social enterprise whose objective is to fight against marine pollution. As part of its Mediterranean Clean-up project, selected by the United Nations Environment Program as one of the 5 best European initiatives, Enaleia is working with the Ecoalf Foundation and Greek fishermen to clean the sea of garbage.

SDG 17: Partnerships to achieve the goals

Enaleia's project has many similarities with UTO, especially in the initial phases of passive trash fishing by the trawl fleet. But in particular, the support of Ecoalf Foundation serves to improve the sorting of waste in the port itself, allowing the recovery of PET plastic.

Since it began in 2020, this collaboration has led to the recovery of 166 tonnes of marine debris from the bottom of the oceans. It currently involves the collaboration of more than 100 boats with almost 750 fishermen distributed in 15 ports throughout the country.

In 2020 Upcycling the Oceans teams up with Enaleia to clean up the Greek coastline

Greece was thefirst step of UTO Med, an initiative led by the Ecoalf Foundation that aims to unite efforts across the Mediterranean Sea and together tackle one of its main threats, marine litter.
