UPCYCLING THE OCEANS EGYPT

Pursuing its goal of ending marine litter, the Ecoalf Foundation arrived in 2023 in Egypt, the country that contributes most to pollution in the Mediterranean. In a region particularly threatened by marine litter, due to high population pressure and the influence of tourism. To this end, with the aim of fostering synergies between organizations working against marine litter, the Ecoalf Foundation once again teamed up with the Greek organization Enaleia to work together in the port of Alexandria.

This first phase of the project seeks to obtain data on the quantities of marine debris present on the Egyptian coast, in order to seek options for waste recovery and recycling. It is estimated that the equivalent of one truckload of garbage is deposited every minute in the oceans.

Plastic debris represents between 9% and 100% of marine floating debris and 50% of the litter on the seabed. Plastic could overtake fish stocks in the near future.
